Agriculture Minister Confident In Meeting Proposals Deadline To Resolve Paddy, Rice Issue

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) is actively working towards resolving the ongoing paddy and rice issue in the country, with plans to submit proposals by March 20 as directed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu expressed optimism about finding solutions to the complex matter, stating that KPKM would collaborate with other relevant ministries to finalize proposals.

“We cannot act in isolation on the paddy and rice issue. It requires coordinated efforts with ministries such as the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, the Finance Ministry, the Economy Ministry, and the Rural and Regional Development Ministry,” Mohamad Sabu said.

He highlighted the complexity of the issue, involving various types of rice including imported and local varieties, as well as the need to consider factors such as supply, pricing, and consumer impact.

Mohamad Sabu assured that KPKM would engage in discussions with relevant agencies and gather feedback from stakeholders, including farmers and manufacturers, before finalizing proposals.

While addressing reporters at the 2024 National Young Farmers Symposium, Mohamad Sabu reiterated that the March 20 deadline is an initial step towards addressing the issue comprehensively.

Anwar had previously instructed KPKM to conduct thorough engagement sessions on the matter, considering aspects such as paddy purchase price, supply factors, world rice prices, local rice sustainability, and consumer impact.

Furthermore, Mohamad Sabu emphasised the importance of educating young farmers about government policies and incentives in the agricultural sector. He highlighted the government’s efforts in providing financial aid, training, and advisory services tailored to support young individuals in the industry.

“The government is committed to empowering young farmers and equipping them with the necessary knowledge and skills to thrive in the agricultural sector,” Mohamad Sabu said.

The government’s concerted efforts and commitment to addressing the rice price issue underscore its dedication to ensuring food security and supporting the agricultural sector’s growth.
