Govt Foots RM48.06 Billion 1MDB Debt Including Payment Of USD3 Billion Last Year: Finance Minister II

There is no allotted expenditure related to 1MDB in the Supplementary Supply Bill.

Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, in the winding speech on the Supplementary Supply Bill (2023) 2024 today (Mar 19) in the Dewan Rakyat, said, however, in the interest of many, please be aware that up to today, the debt and debt commitments resulting from 1MDB, which the Government has paid is as much as RM48.06 billion, including the payment of USD3 billion in March 2023 allocated under the Budget 2023.

The remaining 1MDB debt that needs to be paid is a sukuk with a principal value of RM5 billion that will mature in 2039.

Amir Hamzah explained that under the Settlement Agreement signed in 2020, the Government has received a payment from Goldman Sachs of USD2.5 billion, with an asset recovery guarantee of USD1.4 billion until 2025.

However, on October 11, 2023, Goldman Sachs filed an Arbitration Application in the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) regarding the guarantee related dispute.

The Government by involving various agencies and 1MDB is actively continuing efforts to recover 1MDB assets around the world. The government is confident that this effort will bring results to increase the asset recovery rate.

Aside from these, Dependent Expenses are also not included under Supply Expenses presented through the Supplementary Supply Bill. Therefore, Dependent Expenses are not subject to Dewan Rakyat Meeting Rules 67(5) and (7) which provide for the debate on the Supplementary Supply Bill at the policy and committee level.

These Dependent Expenses include pension payments and Special Grants under Article 112D of the Federal Constitution to Sabah and Sarawak.
