Travel Platform Offers Free Transit Vacation During Layovers

International layovers just got a whole lot more exciting with the launch of “Shanghai Express” by Trip.com Group, offering free layover city tours to travellers transiting through Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG). These unique tours, set to commence on April 15, 2024, are the first of their kind in Shanghai, providing a fantastic opportunity for travellers to explore the vibrant city during their short stopovers.

Catering to international travellers with layovers exceeding eight hours, the “Shanghai Express” tours aim to showcase the top highlights of Shanghai within a few hours. From traditional Chinese architecture in the Yu Garden to the iconic skyline views at the Bund, participants will embark on a journey through Shanghai’s past, present, and future.

“With visa-free transit policies opening up new avenues for international travellers to explore China, Trip.com Group is excited to unveil this innovative programme for those with just a short stopover,” said Trip.com, Head of Marketing, Han Feng.

“We will leverage our extensive resources to ensure a memorable tour experience and provide world-class customer service to help flyers enjoy what Shanghai has to offer,” she added.

Travellers eligible for China’s 72/144-hour visa-free transit policy, as well as those holding a 24-hour temporary entry permit issued by the airport border inspection, can take advantage of these free layover city tours. The tours include everything from airport pick-up and send-off to attraction tickets and e-sim cards, ensuring a hassle-free experience for participants.

Led by English-speaking guides, each tour accommodates a maximum of ten travellers and lasts five to six hours, including transportation to and from the airport. Travellers can choose from various tour timings and itineraries, offering a diverse range of experiences tailored to suit different preferences.

The introduction of the “Shanghai Express” tours comes at a time when international transit through mainland China is on the rise, with over 330,000 travellers experiencing layovers in mainland China last December alone. Shanghai Pudong Airport, along with other international airports in mainland China, has become a hub for international flights, particularly to and from the Asia Pacific region.
