Transition Process To Nation’s 5G Dual-Network Model Begins

The transition process to the 5G dual-network model announced by the Ministry of Communications is a significant step towards advancing the country’s telecommunications industry. The process involves several strategic actions, Minister of Communications Fahmi Fadzil said today.

Fahmi, in a statement released by the ministry today, said firstly, there is the refinement of terms in the Share Subscription Agreement (SSA) between Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) and CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile, and YTL Communications to hold shares in DNB. This is crucial in establishing the ownership structure for the development of 5G infrastructure.

Secondly, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been directed to commence the selection process and appoint a mobile network operator (MNO) to develop the second 5G network in Malaysia. This includes issuing the Applicant Information Package on July 1, 2024, enabling potential companies to submit their proposals.

The main objective of transitioning to the 5G dual-network model is to eliminate monopolistic elements in the 5G service, enhance competition in the telecommunications sector, and ensure broader coverage, competitive pricing, and better service quality for the people of Malaysia.

This decision demonstrates the government’s commitment to developing the country’s digital infrastructure for a more competitive and sustainable future.
