Deputy Minister: NETR Projects Aim for Carbon Reductions, Job Creation

Deputy Economy Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib revealed today in Dewan Rakyat that the investment commitment for Malaysia’s flagship National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) projects has surged to RM60.7 billion, surpassing the initial target of RM25 billion.

Hanifah highlighted the progress made in implementing 10 projects and flagship initiatives across six energy transition drivers. These initiatives are poised to generate 84,544 job opportunities, significantly surpassing the initial target of 23,000 positions. Moreover, they are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 24,264 gigagrams (Gg) of carbon dioxide equivalent annually, well above the initial goal of 10,000 Gg per year.

Responding to Rompin MP Datuk Abdul Khalib Abdullah’s inquiry about NETR Phase One’s progress toward achieving net zero carbon emissions, Hanifah underscored the robust investment identified and the substantial job creation to date.

She outlined that the 10 flagship projects encompass various energy transition drivers: one project focuses on energy efficiency, three on renewable energy, two on hydrogen, one on bioenergy, two on green mobility, and one on carbon capture, utilisation, and storage. These projects are currently at different stages of maturity, with most in the pre-implementation phase and progressing as scheduled.
