Telekom Research & Development Sdn. Bhd. (TM R&D), the innovation arm of Telekom Malaysia Berhad, recently held its fifth industry gathering, forum, and solution showcase, highlighting the theme “Transformative Opportunities with AI Everywhere”. This event comes in the wake of significant investments by global companies and the Malaysian government in AI infrastructure.

The latest edition of TM R&D’s Tech Mocktail series focused on key issues such as brokering the right AI deals, policies to attract global talents while building local capacity, and implementing responsible AI, especially in governance and cybersecurity.

Prominent keynote speakers and subject experts discussed the challenge of balancing technological adoption to enhance efficiency and productivity with the need to preserve jobs and secure the future. The event offered an end-to-end exploration of the AI ecosystem, covering chip design, processing speed, applications, and monetisation. This holistic approach emphasised the importance of viewing AI through a 360-degree lens, where collaboration is as critical as competition.

Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah, CEO of TM R&D, highlighted the future direction: “Moving forward, attention will be directed towards creating environments that foster access and adoption of AI technologies while mitigating the risks of job displacement and societal disparities.” She added that TM R&D is well-positioned to leverage its expertise, innovative solutions, and academic partnerships to promote digitalisation and inclusivity.

The event, held at TM R&D’s campus in Cyberjaya, was attended by notable figures, including Dato’ Zainal Abidin Putih, Chairman of TM, and Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su’ud, Chairman of TM R&D. In his welcoming speech, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham stressed the importance of preparing for AI’s transformative impact in Malaysia and discussed how businesses and government agencies can use AI strategically for economic growth.

Dato’ Sri Idris Jala, Chairman of PEMANDU Associates, served as the keynote speaker, focusing on transformative leadership in a digital world. He underscored the importance of fostering partnerships among the government, industry, and academia to share knowledge and resources. He also emphasised the need for disciplined action to ensure plans are implemented with clear milestones.

The event featured a robust panel discussion on policies, talent, and sustainable growth. With the advent of the next iteration of AI and Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), there is uncertainty about its future impact. The panel addressed key questions regarding the shortage of digital talent in regional markets and strategies to stay on the right growth trajectory.

TM R&D’s industry gathering underscored the critical need for a collaborative approach to AI adoption, ensuring that technological advancements benefit all sectors of society while addressing the challenges posed by rapid digital transformation.
