New Attraction At i City To Boost Tourism In Selangor

i-City, Malaysia’s premier digital city, is set to play a pivotal role in achieving the goals of Visit Selangor 2025 by attracting an estimated 5 million visitors next year. This contribution is expected to help Selangor surpass its target of 7 million tourists, further cementing the state as a top travel destination.

At the groundbreaking ceremony for SkyCity today, Chairman of i-City Selangor, Datuk Seri Tengku Ahmad Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin, highlighted the accelerated growth of bleisure activities in Shah Alam. He noted that DoubleTree by Hilton, the only 5-star DoubleTree in the Hilton Worldwide group in Shah Alam, is thriving as a popular destination. i-City’s attractions, including the CNN-acclaimed City of Digital Lights, Central i-City (Thailand’s first mall in Malaysia), and various other features such as the Digital Sports Arena and Snowalk, draw significant annual tourism footfall from both local and international travelers.

“We believe that SkyCity will be the cherry on top of the cake. By offering unparalleled experiences, we are confident that i-City will draw 5 million visitors from around the globe next year, contributing significantly to the success of Visit Selangor Year 2025’s 7 million tourists goal,” Tengku Ahmad said.

SkyCity, a 60-meter tower adorned with LED lights and featuring a 600-meter glass slide, is expected to open to the public on December 11, 2024, in celebration of the birthday of His Royal Highness Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah ibni Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah. To kick off the state-wide tourism campaign, i-City will carry out extensive promotions, anticipating that the new attraction will be a major draw for both local and international visitors.

Selangor Menteri Besar, Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, who officiated the groundbreaking ceremony, emphasized the economic impact of tourism on Selangor’s GDP. “Selangor covered over a quarter of the country’s GDP in 2024. The tourism services sector was identified as a key driver of Selangor’s economy, contributing 26.5% to the state’s GDP. Tourism products such as SkyCity are important to move the tourism services sector,” Amirudin said.

He added that the addition of SkyCity to Shah Alam’s skyline, visible from the Federal Highway, has the potential to attract numerous tourists to the vicinity daily.
