Datuk Seri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, the Director-General of the Public-Private Partnership Unit (UKAS) at the Prime Minister’s Department, has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary to the Government, effective from 12 August.
The Prime Minister’s Office announced today that this appointment will replace Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali, whose contract will end this Saturday.
According to the statement, Shamsul Azri’s appointment has also been approved by His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim.
Shamsul Azri, 55, holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. He has also received exposure at several international institutions, including the University of Cambridge, UK, and the European Institute of Business Administration (INSEAD).
With 30 years of experience in the public service, Shamsul Azri has served in the Ministry of Finance, the Public Service Department, and state government administration. His most recent position was as the Director-General of UKAS.
Meanwhile, the government expresses its gratitude to Mohd Zuki for his service during his tenure as Chief Secretary, particularly in strengthening the public service delivery system and introducing various reforms to ensure the successful implementation of the national development agenda.
Mohd Zuki, 62, began his role as Chief Secretary on 31 December 2019 and was reappointed on a two-year contract, effective from 11 August 2022 to 10 August 2024.
