AirAsia Malaysia Adds Darwin, Australia To Its Growing Network

AirAsia Malaysia (flight code AK) is expanding its presence in Australia with a new direct route from Kuala Lumpur to Darwin, set to commence on June 27, 2025. This marks the airline’s fifth destination in the country, reinforcing its commitment to strengthening international connectivity.

The new route will operate four times weekly, providing travellers with more affordable options to visit Darwin, the capital of Australia’s Northern Territory. The airline has already been operating flights to Perth since March 2024, complementing its sister airline AirAsia X (flight code D7), which also serves Perth along with Melbourne and Sydney. With the addition of Darwin, AirAsia Group (Malaysia & Indonesia) now operates across five Australian cities.

Over the past year, AirAsia has carried more than 600,000 passengers between Malaysia and Australia. The new route is expected to further boost tourism, trade, and cultural exchange between both nations.

Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations, Robyn Cahill OAM, welcomed the expansion, stating that reconnecting Darwin with Kuala Lumpur would improve air accessibility and affordability for Territorians while strengthening business and investment ties with Southeast Asia.

CEO of AirAsia Malaysia Datuk Captain Fareh Mazputra highlighted the significance of the expansion, describing Darwin as a “hidden gem” for Malaysian and Southeast Asian travellers. He noted that AirAsia’s Fly-Thru services via Kuala Lumpur would enhance accessibility for travellers from key markets, including Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, China, Cambodia, and South Korea.

Executive General Manager of Airports for Airport Development Group Rob Porter described the service as a “significant win” for the Northern Territory, addressing the demand for low-cost travel options between Darwin and major Asian destinations.

To celebrate the new route, AirAsia is offering promotional fares starting from RM299 one-way from Kuala Lumpur and AUD189 one-way from Darwin. These fares are available for booking until March 30, 2025, for travel between June 27 and Oct 25, 2025. Travellers can book tickets via airasia.com or the AirAsia MOVE app.
