SDP, TNB Launch Nation’s First Community Solar Aggregation At Elmina

Sime Darby Property Bhd (SDP), in collaboration with Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), has become Malaysia’s first company to operationalise solar energy generation under the Community Renewable Energy Aggregation Mechanism (CREAM) initiative, a landmark initiative under the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).

Launched by the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry in March 2025, the initiative empowers local energy generators and aggregators (LEGA) to expand community-based access to RE.

Through the partnership with TNB’s solar arm, GSPARX Sdn Bhd, SDP will lease residential rooftops, starting with homes in the City of Elmina, to host solar panels without requiring homeowners to install or finance them. The generated clean energy will be exported via local distribution lines to power the company’s nearby commercial and industrial properties.

This milestone collaboration builds on a strategic joint venture announced in July 2024 between Sime Darby Property and GSPARX, aimed at deploying solar solutions, electric vehicle charging infrastructure and microgrids across Sime Darby Property’s portfolio.

According to SDP Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Azmir Merican, the company’s early adoption underscores its leadership in advancing sustainable townships and inclusive energy solutions.

“Our participation in the CREAM initiative introduces a scalable model that taps into community rooftops to drive solar adoption.

“This supports our emissions reduction goals, complements Malaysia’s energy transition agenda, and reflects our broader commitment to sustainable development,” he said.

He added that as the country’s first LEGA, SDP is contributing towards national RE ambitions while targeting a 40% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Through this pilot project, SDP and TNB are actively supporting Malaysia’s goal of reaching 70% RE capacity by 2050, as envisioned under the NETR and PETRA strategic roadmap.

The initiative not only sets a precedent for future RE aggregation in Malaysia but also highlights the strength of public-private cooperation in achieving national sustainability goals.
