Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil today revealed that social media giant Facebook, managed by parent company Meta, generates a staggering US$15 billion to US$20 billion annually in online advertising revenue from ASEAN countries. From Malaysia alone, Facebook’s advertising revenue amounted to RM2.5 billion.
Speaking to the media, Minister Fahmi expressed significant concern, stating that a portion of this advertising revenue originated from illicit activities, including online gambling and scams.
Meta, which operates widely popular platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, commands a massive global following, with these platforms consistently ranking among the top social media choices in Malaysia. However, Fahmi highlighted that these platforms have become a hotbed for unscrupulous agents exploiting users through various fraudulent schemes. He specifically noted the proliferation of advertisements for investment scams, illegal online drug sales, and the promotion of electronic cigarettes.
The Minister also disclosed that Meta has yet to respond to the Malaysian government’s policy, which came into effect on January 1 this year, requiring social media platforms to apply for a license to operate within the country.
