The Conjuring: Last Rites Scares Up US$83 Million In North America Debut

The Conjuring: Last Rites, the latest instalment of Warner Bros’ popular horror franchise, stormed to the top of the North American box office with an opening haul of US$83 million (S$106.7 million), industry estimates showed Sunday.

The film, which sees Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren battling a demon in a family’s home, drew strong crowds eager for another chapter of the supernatural saga.

“This is a smash,” said analyst David A Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research. “Horror fans can’t get enough of Lorraine and Ed Warren.”

In second place, Disney’s film adaptation of Broadway hit Hamilton earned US$10 million, an “excellent number” according to Gross, considering the production has been available on Disney+ since 2020.

Summer breakout horror Weapons continued its strong run, placing third with US$5.4 million. The thriller about the mysterious disappearance of schoolchildren has grossed US$143 million in the United States and Canada, with an additional US$108 million from overseas markets.

Disney’s Freakier Friday, a sequel to the 2003 body-swapping comedy starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, debuted in fourth place with US$3.8 million. Sony’s crime drama Caught Stealing, featuring Austin Butler and Zoe Kravitz, followed in fifth with US$3.2 million.
