MOT Denies Allegations Of Spec Changes In Mutiara Line LRT Project

The Transport Ministry (MOT) has dismissed claims that the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) contractors were told to revise specifications of the electric train (ET) system to a smaller size.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the allegations, reported by a local news portal citing industry sources, are baseless as the tender process is still ongoing and no contract has been awarded.

“The tender has not been awarded and we are still evaluating submissions, so there is no issue of changing specifications or instructions to any bidder at this stage,” Loke said.

Earlier, it was reported that MRT Corp had asked bidders to submit alternative proposals involving smaller ET sets with lower technological capabilities.

Loke stressed that local participation would remain a core element of the procurement process, including train component assembly.

The 29.5km Mutiara Line, featuring 21 stations, is expected to enhance connectivity between Penang island and the mainland, reduce congestion and boost accessibility.
