Palace Weighs In Mersing Island Tourism Impact

Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has expressed concern over tourism activities around Mersing and its surrounding islands, stressing the need to balance promotion efforts with environmental protection.

His Majesty said while tourism should continue to be promoted as an economic driver, it must be carried out responsibly, with strong safeguards to protect biodiversity and minimise pollution risks.

The King also urged for stronger oversight and enforcement to ensure marine ecosystems are not damaged in the pursuit of growth.

Recently, the Mersing District Council suspended all water-related activities on six islands to support marine conservation efforts. The move highlighted growing concerns over environmental sustainability, prompting His Majesty to call for more effective protection of Malaysia’s natural treasures for the benefit of future generations.
