Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming has acknowledged the criticism directed at him over an incident during a recent media event, saying he accepts the feedback with an open heart and remains committed to upholding media freedom.
In a statement shared on his social media, Nga said he was aware of the reprimand concerning his exchange with a reporter during the pre-launch press conference of the “I Lite U” programme.
The video of the incident, which showed him responding sharply to a question about the use of English in the event’s name, had gone viral and sparked backlash from several quarters, including the National Union of Journalists Malaysia and Gerakan Media Merdeka.
“I realise there may have been some misunderstanding in this matter, and I accept it with an open heart.
“As a leader, I want to stress that I have always respected the freedom of the press and never intended to offend anyone, especially journalists who are the backbone of information for the Madani government,” Nga said.
Nga added that his intention was to foster unity and inclusivity among Malaysians, and to promote Malaysia’s image as a progressive, multi-ethnic nation. He also expressed appreciation for the media’s continued role in communicating his ministry’s initiatives to the public.
“I deeply value the support and presence of media friends who have helped convey the Housing and Local Government Ministry’s efforts to the people,” he said, adding that he is willing to meet the journalists involved soon “to resolve the matter amicably and properly”.
The incident has reignited debate over the government’s relationship with the media, with press freedom advocates urging ministers to show greater sensitivity and openness when engaging with journalists.
