Malaysia is gearing up to become a regional hub for Silicon Carbide (SiC) innovation, driven by rising global demand and new high-value investments, said Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA)chairman Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz in his first official statement under the new role.
He noted that the global SiC industry is expanding at more than 10% annually, fuelled by the rapid growth of electric vehicles, renewable energy and power electronics.
In line with this momentum, leading SiC player SICC (SiC Crystalline) is planning a major SiC substrate manufacturing facility in Johor.
“The new plant is expected to act as a powerful catalyst in advancing the ambitions of Malaysia’s National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS),” he said.
Tengku Zafrul said Malaysia’s robust E&E ecosystem, skilled workforce and strategic logistics positioning give the country a clear competitive advantage in capturing advanced semiconductor activities.
He added that investments like SICC’s will accelerate Malaysia’s rise as the region’s SiC hub for assembly, testing, integration and R&D, strengthening the country’s push into next-generation semiconductor technologies.
