The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning for strong winds and rough seas, with hazardous marine conditions expected across Malaysian waters and key shipping routes until Thursday, Dec 18.
For Malaysian waters within 24 nautical miles, northeasterly winds of between 40kmh and 50kmh and waves of up to 3.5m are forecast off East Johor, Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan, posing risks to small boats, marine recreation and water sports.
MetMalaysia has also cautioned of a sea level rise in the same areas from Dec 13 to Dec 18, raising the risk of coastal inundation.
For shipping and offshore operations, a Category Three warning has been issued for waters off eastern Condore to western Reef North, where winds may exceed 60kmh and waves rise above 4.5 metres, threatening all maritime activities, including oil platform operations.
A Category Two warning covers waters off western Condore, northern Bunguran, eastern Reef North and Layang-Layang, while Category One warnings are in effect for southeast Samui, Tioman, southern Bunguran, Reef South and western Palawan, with conditions dangerous for shipping, fishing and ferry services.
MetMalaysia advised mariners and coastal communities to exercise heightened caution throughout the warning period.
