US President Donald Trump has delayed tariff increases on upholstered furniture, kitchen cabinets, and vanities, slowing the rollout of his levies amid ongoing voter concerns over rising prices.
The White House released a fact sheet on the presidential proclamation late on Wednesday, as Trump hosted a New Year’s Eve party at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. The higher tariffs, originally scheduled to take effect today, will now begin on January 1, 2027.
Under a September proclamation, Trump had planned to raise tariffs on “certain upholstered wooden products” from 25% to 30% on 1 January, while kitchen cabinets and vanities faced an increase from 25% to 50%. Wednesday’s proclamation puts this on hold, leaving the existing 25% tariffs in place.
The US “continues to engage in productive negotiations with trade partners to address trade reciprocity and national security concerns with respect to imports of wood products,” the fact sheet states, hinting at potential deals to further postpone the hikes.
