Monash University Malaysia President and Pro Vice-Chancellor Datuk Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman has been appointed by the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General to an independent expert panel tasked with reviewing global drug policy ahead of the 2029 Commission on Narcotic Drugs evaluation.
The panel, established under UN resolution 68/6, will assess progress on international drug control commitments and recommend reforms to ensure policies align with public health, human rights and scientific evidence.
Professor Adeeba, a leading authority on infectious diseases, harm reduction and public health, said the review offers a “once-in-a-generation” chance to evaluate whether the global drug control system effectively protects health and welfare.
The expert panel draws members from the Commission on Narcotic Drugs, the International Narcotics Control Board and the World Health Organisation, with support from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.
Professor Adeeba has previously contributed to regional and global drug policy initiatives, including founding the Drug Policy Programme Malaysia through the Malaysian AIDS Foundation.
