Higher Education Ministry Allows Flexible Learning Amid Heatwave

The Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia has allowed public universities and higher learning institutions to determine whether to conduct classes physically or online, following rising temperatures in several states.

In a statement, the ministry said institutions have the flexibility to adjust teaching and learning arrangements based on local weather conditions, prioritising the safety and wellbeing of students and staff.

The move comes after the Malaysian Meteorological Department issued alerts placing certain areas under Level 2 hot weather status, indicating prolonged high temperatures that could pose health risks.

Under such conditions, institutions are encouraged to take appropriate precautionary measures, including modifying class schedules or shifting to online learning where necessary.

The ministry stressed that decisions should be made in consideration of student health, campus facilities, and local heat conditions, while ensuring minimal disruption to academic activities.

Malaysia has been experiencing hotter-than-usual weather in recent weeks, prompting authorities to step up advisories and encourage adaptive measures across sectors.
