Old Meets New At The Reopened 1926 Heritage Hotel In Penang

A century after first opening, the 1926 Heritage Hotel in George Town, Penang, has been relaunched, now part of The Unlimited Collection by The Ascott Limited.

Set along Jalan Burma, the restored property brings back a former colonial-era residence built in 1926, reworked into a modern hotel that retains its Anglo-Malay architectural character while updating its interiors for contemporary stays.

The building’s original identity remains visible throughout. The white and beige façade reflects its colonial influence, while design details reference early George Town architecture. Inside, restored structural elements are paired with updated interiors, maintaining continuity with the original building.

Accommodation is divided between larger suite-style units and smaller garden-facing rooms. The Straits Suite features a separate bedroom, living area and study, ideal for longer stays or guests needing more space.

The Heritage Garden Patio Room offers a quieter option through a private outdoor patio and direct access to greenery and the pool. Across all room types, the design is understated, with an emphasis on comfort and practicality.

Facilities cover both work and leisure needs. Two meeting spaces, the Burma Room and Heritage Hall, are designed with natural light and flexible layouts for events and gatherings. A gym, outdoor pool and spa provide wellness options, while a central courtyard garden creates a quieter shared space away from the city.

Dining is anchored by Root House by Gēn, a Chinese bistro led by chef-founder Johnson Wong. The menu draws on Malaysia’s Chinese diaspora and regional culinary influences, reflecting how dishes evolve across cultures and time.

U-Bar provides a casual setting for drinks, while The Heritage Collection by Daily Coffee offers all-day dining with a mix of local and familiar dishes. The U-Shop adds a small retail element, featuring curated artisanal products from Penang.

The location places guests within reach of George Town’s cultural core, including Nagore Square, nearby heritage temples and Hin Bus Depot. The hotel positions itself as a base for exploring the city’s living culture rather than treating heritage as a static feature.

To mark its reopening, a launch offer is available until July 31, 2026, with Heritage Room rates from RM428++ per night, including breakfast for two.
