The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia) said a strong magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck near the east coast of Honshu, Japan, at 3.53 pm April 20, with authorities confirming there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia.
In a post on X, MET Malaysia said the earthquake was located at 40.1° North and 142.9° East at a depth of 50 kilometres, approximately 125 kilometres east of Hachinohe, Japan.
The tremor was classified as strong, though no immediate damage assessments in Japan were detailed in the update shared by MET Malaysia.
The agency reiterated that despite the seismic activity, Malaysia remains unaffected by tsunami risks from the event.
