Govt Eyes Stronger Laws for Digital Market, Including Possible New Act

The government is looking to strengthen regulations governing the digital marketplace, including the possibility of introducing a dedicated law to address rising risks in the online economy.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said existing frameworks must evolve alongside the rapid expansion of digital commerce, where platforms increasingly shape consumer behaviour through algorithms and data-driven strategies.

Ahmad Zahid added that digital platforms are no longer just channels for transactions, but influential ecosystems that affect purchasing decisions, raising concerns over transparency, pricing practices and accountability.

“As with physical transactions, online trade must adhere to clear standards — product information must be accurate, pricing transparent, and refund processes fair,” he said during the launch of the National Consumer Policy 2.0 (DPN 2.0).

Ahmad Zahid added that reforms are necessary to ensure the digital market does not outpace regulation, as the government works to build a more trusted and balanced consumer ecosystem in the digital era.
