Construction Sparks Bursa Gains In Choppy Session Marked By Sector Rotation

Bursa Malaysia closed in mixed territory on May 19, as gains in construction, utilities and selected consumer counters offset selling pressure in banking, staples and healthcare names.

At the close, the gainers’ list was led by Ajinomoto Bhd and Sunway Construction Group Bhd, while losses in heavyweight names such as Nestlé (Malaysia) Bhd and Hong Leong Bank Bhd kept sentiment cautious.

Ajinomoto Bhd topped the gainers, rising 44 sen to RM12.84 on modest volume. Sunway Construction Group Bhd followed up, up 25 sen to RM7.35 on 82,783 lots, while Dutch Lady Milk Industries Bhd added 20 sen to RM33.00.

Westports Holdings Bhd climbed 19 sen to RM6.17 on 114,718 lots, and Batu Kawan Bhd inched up 18 sen to RM20.88.

On the losing side, UMS Integration Bhd led the decliners, slipping 40 sen to RM8.00. Nestlé Bhd fell 36 sen to RM95.04, while Hong Leong Bank Bhd and Hong Leong Industries Bhd both eased 28 sen to RM21.70 and RM18.20, respectively. PetDag Bhd shed 26 sen to RM19.28 on 21,055 lots.

The session reflected continued sector rotation, with construction and transport-linked counters finding support even as investors trimmed exposure to selected blue chips and defensive names.
