Govt Introduces ‘BTS’ Initiative To Curb Concert Ticket Scams

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has unveiled Malaysia’s first nationwide consumer protection initiative against concert ticket fraud amid a surge in major international performances expected in Kuala Lumpur this year.

The “Beli Tiket Selamat” initiative comes as the country enters the “KL Headline Season”, which is set to feature at least 25 international music events across multiple venues, attracting an estimated 500,000 fans from Malaysia and the wider region.

Highlighting growing concerns over ticket scams, Fahmi warned that fraud syndicates could increasingly exploit artificial intelligence (AI) and deepfake advertisements to deceive concertgoers.

“This campaign was created specifically to protect the people from the threat of event ticket scams,” he said.

According to Fahmi, the initiative is designed to safeguard consumers before, during and after ticket fraud incidents through public awareness efforts, victim support services and structured intelligence sharing with enforcement agencies.

At the centre of the campaign is the “belitiketselamat” platform, Malaysia’s first dedicated portal focused on ticket scam awareness, victim reporting and verified scam intelligence.

“The full portal and online help desks will be launched in the coming weeks,” he said.

Fahmi stressed that the initiative complements — rather than replaces — the roles of the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC), the police’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN).

Instead, he said the platform would strengthen enforcement efforts by supplying actionable intelligence to enable faster intervention against scammers.

Under the initiative, future event tickets issued in Malaysia will carry advisory messages encouraging buyers to purchase only from verified platforms and remain alert to scam indicators on social media and messaging apps.

Participating venues will also set up dedicated help desks to assist scam victims, including issuing reference numbers, generating pre-filled NSRC reports and providing guidance on the next course of action within 15 minutes.

Fahmi said every report submitted through the platform would contribute to a national intelligence ecosystem aimed at improving scam detection and public awareness.

He added that the initiative reflects close cooperation between the government, industry players and the public in strengthening consumer protection efforts.

The launch event, hosted by concert promoters Live Nation Malaysia and PR Worldwide, was also attended by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh.
