Malaysia will retain its petroleum production quota under the OPEC+ alliance for 2026, providing certainty for the country’s oil and gas sector despite ongoing global energy supply disruptions.
Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said the quota remains unchanged as previously agreed under Malaysia’s commitment to the producer group.
“We have a commitment with OPEC+, and it has been agreed that the 2026 quota will remain as decided earlier,” he said.
The decision was reached during the OPEC+ meeting in Vienna, Austria, last Sunday.
Looking ahead, Akmal said OPEC+ is undertaking a review under its Maximum Sustainable Capacity (MSC) initiative to reassess member countries’ production quotas for 2027 based on a more comprehensive evaluation of their actual output capabilities.
He said Malaysia will cooperate fully in the study to ensure future quotas remain balanced and aligned with the country’s production capacity.
“The quota for 2027 must reflect our real production capability. Output levels can change due to factors such as maintenance work at plants or offshore platforms,” he said.
Akmal added that the 2027 quota is still under review as Malaysia’s petroleum production fluctuates from year to year depending on operational conditions.
