Cha Ji-Hyuk Brings Star Power To Sarawak In New Korean–Malaysian Film

A new Korean–Malaysian film is heading into production in Sarawak this month, bringing a mix of international star power and local talent to the state’s growing screen industry.

According to The Borneo Post, South Korean actor Cha Ji-hyuk, best known for the Netflix series Bloodhounds, will lead the upcoming feature Distinct: Becoming Sarawak, with filming set to begin on 15 June in Kuching.

The project brings together Monster Factory Co Ltd in South Korea and Malaysia’s The Black Label Sdn Bhd in a cross-border collaboration that unites cast and crew from both countries. Cha will be joined in the lead cast by Malaysian actresses Siti Nur Aishah Bee Md Nor and Shelyn Poh.

At its core, the film follows a familiar Korean romantic comedy style, but uses its local setting as more than just a backdrop. The story explores love, healing, identity and human connection, while actively placing Sarawak’s urban life and natural scenery into the narrative.

Production teams say they aim to reflect how different communities in Sarawak live together while maintaining their own identities, and to present Kuching as a modern city shaped by cultural diversity. In practical terms, the production will film across both city locations and natural landscapes to capture a full view of the state.

Behind the camera, Shin Ji-hwan directs the film, while Park Ho-young writes the screenplay. A South Korean technical team oversees key areas such as cinematography, lighting, sound and music. Haesurim Co Ltd backs the production, while Lee Chung Chung of LIE Collection leads costume design, bringing experience from fashion weeks in Seoul, New York, Paris and London.

The production also includes a strong local component. Semarak Kreatif Sdn Bhd leads Malaysian production support, while casting sessions took place earlier this year in Kuala Lumpur and Kuching to bring in local performers. Acting coach Yeum Dong-jin is currently based in Sarawak, running workshops and script sessions with Malaysian actors ahead of filming.

Producers expect the project to create more opportunities for local crew and performers, while strengthening ongoing collaboration between the two countries’ creative industries. Further casting announcements and production updates will follow in the coming weeks.
