It’s back-to-school for Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as both are in negotiations for a third installment in the rebooted 21 Jump Street franchise to return as the comedy duo Schmidt and Jenko.
24 Jump Street is in the works at Sony Pictures (despite 22 Jump Street being the previous installment), more than a decade later, with Rodney Rothman directing from a script he wrote with Hill and Meghan Malloy. No plot details have been shared, and it is unclear why the number 23 was skipped over for the current film’s title. Rothman is credited for working on the script for 22 Jump Street, along with Michael Bacall and Oren Uziel.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller are returning to produce after co-directing the first two movies, with producer Neal H. Moritz also back. Tatum and Hill are also producing, along with their respective partners Reid Carolin and Matt Dines. Ice Cube will also be returning as Captain Dickson, the gruff police chief who manages Jump Street.
The films are based on the 21 Jump Street series that premiered on Fox in 1987 and ran for five seasons. Johnny Depp, who had a cameo in the first movie, starred in the show that counted Patrick Hasburgh and Stephen J. Cannell as co-creators. The 2012 film and first installment follow Schmidt (Hill) and Jenko (Tatum) going undercover as high school students in an attempt to infiltrate a drug ring, while its 2014 sequel shows them posing as college students.
The script has also received the green light from Tatum himself. Back in 2024, Tatum noted that a script for a third movie in the 21 Jump Street series had been written a while back, with the actor singing its praises. “You know what, I’m going to put some good juju out there, and I’m going to say I would love to see 23 Jump Street,” Tatum said at the time. “I would love to do it with Jonah, and Jonah I know wants to do it. We would love to just get to go play again.”
The last film ended with a montage of future sequels that was humorous, so it was inevitable that a third installment would be happening along those lines.
