Selangor To Demolish Illegal Rohingya Flats

Selangor authorities will demolish an illegal multi-storey residential building in Kampung Baru Sungai Makau, Hulu Langat, following years of enforcement action against unlawful structures on the site.

The Hulu Langat District and Land Office (PDT Hulu Langat) said the building, which recently drew attention on social media, is largely located on privately owned residential land, with part of the structure encroaching onto a road reserve.

“Several illegal residential structures were also built on the land and an adjacent river reserve, with the premises previously occupied by members of the Rohingya community,”it said.

PDT Hulu Langat said warning notices for illegal occupation under Section 425 of the National Land Code were issued in 2017, 2020, 2021 and most recently on March 13, 2025.

A joint demolition operation involving multiple agencies, including the Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS), Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj), Public Works Department (JKR), Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS), was previously carried out in 2017.

MPKj had also issued notices and compounds between 2016 and 2021 for constructing buildings without written approval.

Meanwhile, LUAS has opened an investigation under the LUAS Enactment 1999 against those responsible for erecting the unauthorised structures. Offenders face fines of up to RM50,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both upon conviction.

In a separate joint operation with police on Feb 28 this year, the Selangor Immigration Department detained 42 foreign nationals suspected of committing offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63.

PDT Hulu Langat said demolition works on the multi-storey building will be carried out in accordance with existing laws as authorities continue efforts to curb illegal occupation of government land.
