Julian Quinones emerged as the standout performer, scoring the opening goal before helping create the second as Javier Aguirre’s side dominated proceedings in front of an energetic home crowd.

Mexico threatened early through Raul Jimenez, whose effort was pushed wide by South Africa captain Ronwen Williams. The breakthrough arrived in the ninth minute when Erik Lira won possession high up the pitch and Quinones slotted home through the goalkeeper’s legs.

South Africa were fortunate to trail by only one goal at the interval after Williams produced several key saves while Quinones also struck the post.

The visitors’ task became even more difficult early in the second half when Sphephelo Sithole was shown a red card for bringing down Jimenez as the striker raced through on goal.

Mexico quickly capitalised on the numerical advantage. Quinones combined neatly with Jimenez before releasing Roberto Alvarado, whose cross was headed in by Jimenez at the back post in the 67th minute.

Both teams finished the match with 10 men after South Africa substitute Themba Zwane and Mexico defender Cesar Montes were sent off late in the game.

Quinones was named the Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match following his goal and assist performance.

The match also saw Mexico teenager Gilberto Mora make history. At 17 years and 240 days old, he became the sixth-youngest player ever to appear at a FIFA World Cup.
