Universiti Malaya (UM) has attained its highest-ever position in the QS World University Rankings, climbing two spots to 56th globally in the 2027 edition.
The latest ranking cements UM’s status as Malaysia’s top university and places it among the top 3.7% of institutions worldwide.
According to the university, it emerged as the country’s highest-ranked institution in Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, Employment Outcomes and Sustainability. Globally, UM ranked 56th in Academic Reputation, 61st in Employer Reputation, 184th in Employment Outcomes and 166th in Sustainability.
The university also recorded strong performances in International Research Network and International Students, ranking 125th and 153rd respectively.
UM Vice-Chancellor Datuk Seri Professor Ir Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman described the achievement as a milestone for both the institution and the country.
“It is the outcome of a university that has chosen discipline over complacency, execution over rhetoric, and collective purpose over mere conventional normalcy,” he said.
He said the result reflected the efforts of the university’s academics, researchers, students, staff and leadership teams.
“It affirms that when strategic vision is matched with clarity, cohesion, courage, and sustained action, Universiti Malaya will not merely participate in the global higher education landscape, we are there to define it,” he added.
UM posted an overall score of 81.2 in the latest rankings, with particularly strong scores in Academic Reputation (92.8), Employer Reputation (93.1), International Research Network (93.4), International Students (93.1) and International Faculty (83.7).
The QS World University Rankings 2027 assessed 8,808 institutions worldwide, including 32 from Malaysia, with 1,504 universities across 106 locations making the final list.
Founded in 1905, UM is celebrating its 121st anniversary this year and has produced numerous leaders and scholars who have contributed at both national and international levels.
