Egypt secured a landmark moment in their football history by claiming their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory, coming from behind to defeat New Zealand 3-1 in a dramatic Group G encounter.
Trailing early after Finn Surman’s powerful 15th-minute header put the All Whites in front, Egypt weathered an energetic New Zealand start before turning the match on its head with a composed and clinical second-half display.
Mostafa Zico sparked the comeback with a well-taken equaliser, before Mohamed Salah delivered the decisive moment nine minutes later, finishing a flowing move with trademark precision to tilt the contest in Egypt’s favour.
Trezeguet later added a late third to seal a historic win for Hossam Hassan’s side, completing a turnaround that not only earned three points but also marked Egypt’s first World Cup triumph in 92 years of participation.
New Zealand had started brightly and created early pressure, with Surman’s set-piece goal reflecting their strong opening spell, while Egypt was initially frustrated despite chances for Salah and Emam Ashour.
But once Zico levelled matters, momentum swung decisively, with Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir also producing key saves to keep his side within reach before the breakthrough.
Salah’s strike proved the defining moment, setting off jubilant celebrations as Egypt took control and never looked back on their way to a famous win that keeps their knockout hopes firmly alive.
