Malaysia Welcomes US-Iran MoU, Supports Efforts To Reopen Strait Of Hormuz

Malaysia has expressed support for the recently signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran, describing it as a positive step towards restoring peace and stability in West Asia.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan told the Dewan Rakyat that Malaysia was among the earliest countries to issue an official statement backing the agreement, which seeks to end the military conflict and pave the way for a comprehensive peace settlement within 60 days.

He said the conflict had created significant economic repercussions globally, including for Malaysia, particularly through disruptions to energy supply chains and rising fuel prices.

According to Mohamad, one of the immediate consequences of the conflict was the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, a strategic shipping route that handles about one-fifth of global crude oil supplies. The disruption raised concerns over oil and diesel prices worldwide, including in Malaysia, which continues to import energy-related supplies from the Gulf region.

The minister said the MoU contains 14 conditions and marks a breakthrough after previous disagreements between Washington and Tehran. He noted that negotiations are ongoing and are expected to culminate in a final agreement within 60 days.

Among the key areas under discussion are the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the complete withdrawal of US troops and a proposed economic reconstruction programme for Iran valued at no less than US$300 billion.

Mohamad said Malaysia hopes the negotiations currently taking place in Switzerland will lead to a lasting agreement that ensures peace and stability in West Asia, a region that remains crucial to global supplies of fertiliser, oil and liquefied natural gas.

He added that Malaysia has also worked alongside countries including the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia in supporting diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict. The country was also a co-sponsor of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817 concerning the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Mohamad revealed that during a recent meeting with his Iranian counterpart at the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, Iran reiterated that a full US military withdrawal remains a fundamental condition for any lasting settlement.
