The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning for several states, with heavy rain and strong winds expected to persist until 5pm today.
Affected areas in Kedah include Kuala Muda, Sik, Baling, Kulim and Bandar Baharu, while the entire state of Penang is also under alert.
In Terengganu, the warning covers Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu, Marang, Dungun and Kemaman.
Johor areas affected are Batu Pahat, Kluang, Pontian, Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Johor Bahru.
In Sarawak, the warning extends to Kuching, Tebedu in Serian, Samarahan, Asajaya, Sri Aman, Betong, Selangau, Daro, Matu, Dalat, Mukah, Song, Tatau, Subis, Beluru, Miri, Marudi and Limbang.
Meanwhile, in Sabah, affected areas include Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Nabawan, Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran, Kota Belud and Telupid. The Federal Territory of Labuan is also under the weather alert.
MetMalaysia said the warning is issued when indications show thunderstorms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour are imminent or expected to persist for more than an hour.
The department noted that thunderstorm warnings are short-term advisories valid for no longer than six hours from the time of issuance.
