A powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Iwate Prefecture in northeastern Japan on Thursday morning, with strong tremors felt as far as Tokyo.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the quake struck at 7.30am local time at a depth of about 50 kilometres. It registered an upper 6 on Japan’s seven-point seismic intensity scale in Hashikami, Aomori Prefecture.
The epicentre was located at latitude 40.2 degrees north and longitude 142.3 degrees east.
Despite the strong shaking, JMA said no tsunami warning was issued.
