Philippines Highlights ASEAN Role And Malaysia Ties On Independence Day Reception

The Philippine Embassy in Malaysia celebrated the 128th anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence with a diplomatic reception highlighting the country’s commitment to regional cooperation, economic integration and stronger Malaysia-Philippines ties.

In her address, Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia Maria Angela A. Ponce reflected on this year’s theme, “Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan” (Freedom, Future and History), emphasising that independence represents an ongoing responsibility rather than a historical milestone alone.

She said freedom is a continuing legacy built through courage and sacrifice, including among Filipinos who travel abroad in pursuit of better opportunities for themselves and their families.

The Ambassador noted that the celebration carried added significance as the Philippines serves as the Chair of ASEAN this year, with the country committed to promoting regional peace, stability, economic integration, innovation and digital transformation.

She added that the Philippines would continue efforts to ensure that the benefits of regional growth reach communities across ASEAN.

Ambassador Ponce also highlighted the expanding presence of Philippine companies operating in Malaysia, including Petron Malaysia, Avaland Berhad, the Jollibee Group, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Universal Robina Corporation and Personal Collection.

She also recognised Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific Air for strengthening connectivity between the two countries.

“Filipino enterprises are contributing to economic growth, job creation and innovation in Malaysia. These companies are not merely conducting business; they serve as bridges between our two economies,” she said.

The Ambassador also expressed appreciation to Malaysia for its solidarity and swift offer of assistance to communities affected by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Mindanao.

Looking ahead, she highlighted the upcoming commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation, which will take place on 24 July during the ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting in Manila.
