LRT3 Capacity Sufficient To Meet Demand Through 2040, Parliament Told

The Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3) Shah Alam Line has sufficient capacity to meet projected ridership needs through 2040 despite earlier reductions to its project scope in 2018, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah said the system is currently capable of handling up to 223,560 passengers per day.

He said the figure far exceeds initial demand expectations, with projected first-year ridership at around 67,000 passengers daily.

“Therefore, LRT3’s current capacity is sufficient to meet commuters’ needs,” he said during the question-and-answer session.

According to him, the line is operating with 22 three-car train sets, each with a capacity of 6,210 passengers per hour per direction (PPHPD), translating to the overall daily capacity of 223,560 passengers.

He added that ridership is expected to grow steadily over the coming decades, with forecasts of 126,000 passengers per day in 2030, 219,000 in 2040 and 324,000 in 2050.

“This means the existing capacity of 223,560 passengers per day is sufficient to meet projected demand through 2040,” he said.
