Sunway University Makes History With First-Ever Malaysian Cheerleading Silver

Malaysia has secured a historic milestone in university sports after the Sunway University Cheerleading Team became the first Malaysian squad to compete at the FISU World University Championship Cheerleading 2026, returning home with a silver medal in the Coed Elite Division.

The achievement came in Gothenburg, Sweden, where the team competed against top university squads from China, Brazil, Hungary and Sweden under the banner of the championship organised by the Swedish University Sports Federation, the Swedish Cheerleading Federation and Gothenburg & Co. The event brought together student athletes from around the world, reflecting the International University Sports Federation values of excellence, passion and team spirit.

In a statement, Sunway University Cheerleading Team president Nicholas Low Kah Hung said, “We are extremely proud and grateful to have won a silver medal for Malaysia as Sunway student athletes. This achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our coaches and Sunway University.”

The team’s journey to Sweden was marked by a send-off ceremony held at Sunway University, attended by university leaders, students and supporters who gathered to celebrate their historic qualification and wish them success on the global stage.

The result marks a significant step forward for Malaysian university sports, highlighting growing competitiveness in international cheerleading and strengthening the country’s presence in global student athletics. It also reflects Sunway University’s continued focus on developing students beyond academics through leadership, sport and international exposure.
