East Malaysia is expected to be hit by thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds until 6pm today, according to the Malaysia Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).
The weather warning covers several areas in Sarawak, including Kuching, Samarahan (Samarahan and Asajaya), Sarikei (Julau), Sibu, Mukah (Matu, Dalat and Mukah), Kapit (Song), Bintulu (Tatau) and Limbang.
In Sabah, the affected areas are Pedalaman (Nabawan), the West Coast (Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran and Kota Belud), Sandakan (Tongod and Beluran), and Kudat (Kota Marudu and Pitas).
MetMalaysia said the warning was issued after weather conditions indicated thunderstorms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour were imminent or expected to persist for more than an hour.
The department added that thunderstorm warnings are short-term advisories, with each issuance remaining valid for no longer than six hours.
