Govt Urges Public To Report Banks Still Charging RM1 ATM Fee

Bank customers who are still being charged the RM1 fee for interbank cash withdrawals at bank-owned automated teller machines (ATMs) have been urged to lodge complaints with Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), which can take action against banks that fail to comply with the fee waiver.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the waiver, which took effect yesterday, applies to ATMs owned and operated by banks participating in the shared ATM network.

“If customers are still being charged the RM1 fee at bank-owned ATMs, they should report the matter to BNM for further action,” he said.

Fahmi said the waiver covers about 84% of all bank-owned ATMs nationwide, or nearly 16,000 machines, allowing customers to withdraw cash from participating banks’ ATMs without incurring the RM1 charge.

The remaining 16% of ATMs are operated by non-bank private companies under separate commercial arrangements and will continue to impose the withdrawal fee.

The clarification follows public queries on social media over the implementation of the waiver.

To avoid confusion, Fahmi advised customers to look for the bank’s logo on ATM machines to ensure they are using bank-owned facilities instead of third-party-operated machines.

He added that the Association of Banks in Malaysia (ABM) and the Malaysian Islamic Banking and Financial Institutions Association (AIBIM) are expected to issue a joint statement soon with further details on the implementation of the fee waiver.
