The expansion of Penang International Airport is progressing on schedule, with key work packages showing steady advancement and the project expected to be completed in 2028, Bernama reported.
Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said overall progress remains encouraging across all major components of the development.
He said Work Package One (WP01), which covers support buildings, utility relocation, infrastructure works and the Remote Digital Virtual Tower (RDVT), has been fully completed.
“The Certificate of Completion and Compliance (CCC) for the entire package was obtained on July 1,” he said in a statement following a site visit.
Attention has now shifted to Work Package Two (WP02), which involves airside works including apron expansion, taxilanes, drainage systems and airport lighting. This phase is currently about 70% complete.
For Work Package Three (WP03), which covers expansion of the main terminal building, the design stage has been finalised while procurement work began on June 25.
Zairil said the expansion is part of a Federal Government initiative aimed at significantly increasing the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity from 6.5 million to 12 million.
He said the upgrade is necessary to support rising passenger demand, improve domestic and international connectivity and strengthen Penang’s broader economic growth.
“The state government will continue working closely with the Federal Government, the airport operator and all relevant agencies to ensure the smooth implementation of the project, while minimising disruption to airport operations and ensuring the comfort of passengers throughout the construction period,” he said.
Once completed, the expanded airport is expected to support growth in tourism, trade, investment and logistics, further reinforcing Penang’s position as a key economic hub in northern Malaysia.
