Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has started the next phase of the Baggage Handling System (BHS) replacement programme at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1, focusing on baggage reclaim carousels for international arriving passengers, Bernama reported.
MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said hoarding installation works at Carousel E began on Thursday to allow replacement works on the baggage reclaim belt, while similar works at Carousel F are scheduled to begin on Aug 31.
The upgrade works at both carousels are expected to be completed by January 2027, before the modernisation programme continues in stages at the remaining baggage reclaim areas.
“The BHS replacement programme is being delivered in carefully planned phases to ensure KLIA remains fully operational while we modernise critical airport infrastructure.
“Each completed phase strengthens the system’s reliability, resilience and capacity, enabling us to better serve passengers and airline partners well into the future,” he said in a statement on Friday.
Mohd Izani said the phased approach allows KLIA to continue operating while key airport infrastructure is upgraded, with MAHB working together with airlines and ground-handling partners to minimise disruption.
“While passengers may experience some temporary congestion within the baggage reclaim hall, baggage delivery operations will continue as normal,” he said.
MAHB said four temporary baggage collection areas will be activated when required to manage baggage volumes and prevent congestion at the carousels. Clear signage will be provided to guide passengers, while baggage operations, ground handling and customer experience teams will assist travellers during the transition.
The airport operator added that safety remains a priority throughout the modernisation programme, with all construction and installation works carried out according to operational requirements to safeguard passengers and airport personnel.
