China Imposes Temporary Ban On Helium Exports

China has imposed a temporary ban on helium exports with immediate effect, marking the latest move by Beijing to tighten controls over strategic resources amid evolving global trade dynamics.

The restriction was jointly announced on Friday by China’s Ministry of Commerce and the General Administration of Customs, with authorities stating that the measure took effect immediately upon its publication.

According to the official notice, the export suspension was implemented in accordance with China’s Foreign Trade Law, although no specific reasons or duration for the ban were disclosed.

The authorities said further adjustments to the policy would be announced separately.

The move comes as helium remains a critical industrial gas used across a wide range of high-value industries, including semiconductor manufacturing, aerospace, healthcare, scientific research, fibre-optic production and liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing.

Helium is also indispensable in the production of advanced electronics, where it is used to cool equipment and create controlled manufacturing environments for semiconductor fabrication.

Although China is not the world’s largest producer of helium, the country has increasingly expanded its domestic helium production and refining capabilities in recent years as part of broader efforts to improve supply security for strategic materials.

The export restriction could tighten global helium supplies, particularly for manufacturers that rely on imports from multiple sources to support production. Industries such as semiconductor manufacturing, medical imaging and aerospace may face renewed supply chain uncertainties if the suspension is prolonged.

The announcement also follows a broader trend of Beijing tightening export controls on strategically important commodities and materials. In recent years, China has introduced restrictions on exports of several critical minerals and technologies deemed essential to national security and industrial competitiveness.

No timeline has been provided for the lifting of the export ban. Authorities said any revisions or additional measures would be announced at a later date.
