Bursa Extends Midday Rally On Heavyweight Buying Despite Broad-Based Selling

Bursa Malaysia remained in positive territory at midday of July 13 as bargain hunting in selected heavyweight stocks offset early profit-taking, although overall market sentiment stayed weak with decliners outpacing gainers.

At 12:30pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 6.43 points, or 0.38%, to 1,697.92 from its close of 1,691.49 on July 10.

The broader market, however, was mixed, with the FBM Emas adding 27.53 points, or 0.22%, to 12,551.34, the FBM Shariah climbing 44.16 points, or 0.36%, to 12,417.77, and the F4GBM gaining 2.59 points, or 0.26%, to 1,018.18. The FBM 70, however, slipped 34.60 points, or 0.19%, to 17,823.87.

Market breadth remained negative, with 586 losers outnumbering 314 gainers, while 510 counters were unchanged, 1,304 were untraded and 33 suspended.

Plantation and heavyweight stocks underpinned the benchmark, with United Plantations Bhd rising 48 sen to RM34.74, Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd adding 32 sen to RM21.92, SD Guthrie Bhd advancing 32 sen to RM6.56, Press Metal Aluminium Holdings Bhd gaining 16 sen to RM7.86 and Petronas Chemicals Group Bhd climbing 15 sen to RM4.45.

On the losing side, Malaysian Pacific Industries Bhd fell RM1.10 to RM44.90, Petronas Dagangan Bhd shed 44 sen to RM19.12, Nestlé (M) Bhd eased 24 sen to RM91.56, Kelington Group Bhd declined 23 sen to RM7.73, while Hong Leong Industries Bhd lost 18 sen to RM18.46.

Trading activity remained robust, with 1.68 billion shares worth RM911.44 million changing hands. Tanco Holdings Bhd topped the actives list with 183.45 million shares traded, followed by Zetrix AI Bhd (41.46 million shares), HHRG Bhd (27.72 million), VS Industry Bhd (27.41 million) and NationGate Holdings Bhd (22.14 million).
