Retail fuel prices in Malaysia remain lower than those in major oil-producing countries, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim told the Dewan Rakyat today.
Anwar said the subsidised RON95 petrol price under the BUDI MADANI initiative is maintained at RM1.99 per litre, compared with more than RM2.40 per litre in Saudi Arabia.
He said the comparison underscores the government’s continued commitment to keeping fuel prices affordable, dismissing claims that Malaysia is no longer competitive on petrol pricing.
“Fuel prices in Malaysia are lower than those in Qatar and Saudi Arabia — that is a fact that must be remembered,” he said.
He noted that when calls were previously made to lower petrol prices to RM1.50 per litre, Saudi Arabia’s price was around 50 sen at the time.
“Now, RON95 is RM1.99 per litre here, while Saudi Arabia exceeds RM2.40. Qatar and the United Arab Emirates have also recorded higher prices, with the UAE raising fuel prices two months ago despite being a major oil producer,” he added.
Anwar was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Rosol Wahid (PN-Hulu Terengganu), who raised comparisons with fuel pricing during the administration of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, as well as Anwar’s earlier pledge to reduce petrol prices
