Blue Beetle is making his way back into the DC universe. Xolo Maridueña will reprise his role as Jaime Reyes in ‘Superman: Man of Tomorrow’, marking the character’s first appearance since the 2023 film ‘Blue Beetle’.
According to Deadline, sources close to the production confirmed that Maridueña will return as the superhero in the upcoming Superman sequel. DC Studios has not yet commented on the report.
Maridueña joins a growing cast that includes David Corenswet as Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The film will also feature Lars Eidinger as Brainiac, along with other DC characters including Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner and Mister Terrific.
Production on ‘Man of Tomorrow’ began in Atlanta in April and is continuing through the summer.
The return marks another appearance for Jaime Reyes, the third character to take on the Blue Beetle name in DC Comics. Created as a teenager from El Paso, Jaime first appeared as Blue Beetle in 2006 after the character’s origins date back to Fox Comics in 1939.
In the 2023 film, Maridueña played Jaime as a recent college graduate trying to figure out his future when he discovers an alien scarab. The device bonds with him and gives him a powerful suit of armour, turning him into the latest Blue Beetle while drawing him into a battle involving Kord Industries.
The sequel’s plot details remain unknown, including how Blue Beetle will fit into the story. However, Maridueña’s return keeps Jaime Reyes part of DC’s evolving screen universe as the studio continues to introduce and reconnect its roster of heroes.
