The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning for several states across the country, with heavy rain and strong winds expected until 5pm today.
The affected areas are Perlis; Kedah (Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena and Padang Terap); Perak (Manjung, Perak Tengah and Hilir Perak); Pahang (Cameron Highlands, Raub, Bentong and Rompin); Selangor (Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Klang, Gombak, Petaling, Kuala Langat, Hulu Langat and Sepang); the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya; Negeri Sembilan (Jelebu, Seremban, Port Dickson, Kuala Pilah, Rembau and Tampin); Melaka; and Johor (Tangkak, Segamat and Muar).
The warning also covers parts of East Malaysia, including Sarawak’s Kuching, Samarahan, Mukah (Matu, Dalat and Mukah), Kapit (Song), and Miri (Subis, Telang Usan and Miri), as well as Sabah’s Interior (Kuala Penyu) and Tawau Division (Tawau and Semporna), including the Federal Territory of Labuan.
MetMalaysia said the warning is issued when there are indications of thunderstorms producing rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that are imminent or expected to persist for more than an hour.
The department noted that thunderstorm warnings are short-term advisories, with each issuance valid for no more than six hours.
