The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning for multiple states across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, with heavy rain and strong winds expected until 7pm today.
Among the affected areas are Bandar Baharu in Kedah; Seberang Perai Selatan in Penang; several districts across Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Johor, as well as parts of Sarawak, Sabah and Labuan.
In Perak, the warning covers Kerian, Larut, Matang dan Selama, Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar, Manjung, Kinta, Perak Tengah and Kampar.
Kelantan residents in Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Jeli and Tanah Merah are also expected to experience adverse weather, while in Terengganu, the warning includes Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu, Marang, Dungun and Kemaman.
The affected areas in Pahang are Cameron Highlands, Temerloh, Bera, Pekan and Rompin, while in Selangor, the warning covers Kuala Selangor, Klang, Petaling and Hulu Langat. In Negeri Sembilan, Jelebu and Jempol are on alert, alongside Mersing and Kota Tinggi in Johor.
In East Malaysia, the warning covers parts of Kuching, Samarahan, Sibu, Kapit, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang in Sarawak, as well as Kuala Penyu, Beaufort and the West Coast of Sabah, including Labuan.
MetMalaysia said the warning is issued when there are indications of thunderstorms capable of producing rainfall exceeding 20mm per hour, either occurring or expected to persist for more than an hour.
The department noted that thunderstorm warnings are short-term alerts, valid for a period not exceeding six hours from the time of issuance.
