Visitors attending the 2026 National Day celebration at Dataran Putrajaya have been urged to maintain cleanliness and dispose of rubbish properly to avoid a repeat of the waste problem seen after the recent FIFA World Cup final gathering at Dataran Merdeka.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh said cleanliness was a shared responsibility and should not be left solely to the Putrajaya Corporation (PPj) after an event ends.
“Imagine coming to celebrate National Day, but when we leave, the area is filled with rubbish. I do not think that is appropriate, and I urge everyone to dispose of waste at the designated places,” she said after officiating the MADANI Kita (PMK) 2026 programme with the Putrajaya community on Saturday.
Hannah said authorities would focus on raising public awareness, while PPj would add more rubbish bins at suitable locations and increase collection frequency during the celebration.
She said the steps were intended to ensure the venue remains clean throughout the event and to prevent a repeat of the rubbish accumulation at Dataran Merdeka after thousands of football fans gathered to watch the FIFA World Cup 2026 final.
Earlier, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) carried out cleaning works at Dataran Merdeka after the gathering, but stressed that maintaining public cleanliness should not depend solely on post-event cleaning efforts.
The 2026 National Day celebration will be held at Dataran Putrajaya on Aug 31.
