Subang MP Wong Chen has resigned as an MP effective 5pm on Aug 10, becoming the latest PKR parliamentarian to vacate his seat following the departures of former party heavyweights Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
In a social media post, Wong said he handed his resignation letter to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul on Aug 5, with the resignation taking effect on Aug 10 at 5pm.
He said the advance notice was intended to give parliamentary officers three working days to prepare for the vacancy of the Subang parliamentary seat, adding that he and the Speaker had a “gentleman’s agreement” not to disclose details until the resignation took effect.
Wong also said his office would remove the “Yang Berhormat” honorific from its billboards, signage and correspondence by next month.
Wong Chen is a three-term MP, first elected to the Kelana Jaya seat in 2013, and later re-elected to the renamed Subang constituency with a landslide majority in 2018 and 2022.
A trained lawyer, Wong Chen previously chaired Pakatan’s alternative budget committee.
His exit is expected to intensify speculation over his next political move, particularly whether he will join Parti Bersama Malaysia (BERSAMA) alongside Rafizi and Nik Nazmi.
Wong had previously indicated in May that he intended to eventually leave PKR for BERSAMA, although he stopped short at the time of confirming when such a move would take place.
Rafizi, the former PKR deputy president, and former party vice-president Nik Nazmi quit PKR in May and vacated their Pandan and Setiawangsa parliamentary seats before taking over BERSAMA, positioning the party as a new multiracial political platform focused on reform and generational renewal.
Wong’s resignation therefore adds another layer to the political realignment surrounding PKR, although he has yet to formally confirm in his latest statement whether he will join BERSAMA.
